Hungary is a landlocked country in the Carpathian Basin of Central Europe, with an area of 93,030 km2. It is bounded to the north by Slovakia; to the northeast by the Ukraine; to the east by Romania; to the south by Serbia and Montenegro and Croatia; to the southwest by Slovenia and to the west by Austria.
Hungary was one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world in the past decade, with its capital regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. The capital of Hungary is Budapest and has approximately 1.7 million inhabitants. Located in the north of the country, Budapest comprises of 23 independent districts, on both sides of the Danube, within the original Buda and Pest cities which became a unified city in 1873.
After joining the European Union in 2004, Budapest has experienced a bustling boom in most aspects of its daily lifestyle, leaving behind its communist past to move onto a cosmopolitan atmosphere, with a multicultural approach, becoming one of the leading 21st century European cities.
Each district in Budapest has its own local government. There are six districts in Buda, sixteen districts in Pest and there is one district on Csepel Island between them. Each district can be associated with one or more city parts named after former towns within Budapest. Budapest’s districts are numbered clockwise, in widening circles, similarly to the districts of Paris.
